Why is My Air Conditioner Blowing Warm Air?

It’s really very frustrating when you have AC at home but can’t get cool air on a hot day, and the worst situation is when you feel warm on a particularly hot day, even though your air-conditioning sounds like it’s working.

What’s going on? It is important to understand what the root cause of the problem is and why your AC is blowing warm air. Some are silly reasons that you can troubleshoot yourself, others are more serious like electrical and refrigerant leaks, and for that you need to call an hvac professional.

Let’s learn some common reasons why your AC is blowing warm air and which one you may troubleshoot at your end or call a professional.

Thermostat issues
The first thing to be checked is your thermostat. Sometimes, the problem could be as minor as having the thermostat’s wrong settings. Ensure your thermostat is set to COOL and the fan set to AUTO. And, of course, that the set temperature is actually lower than the room temperature.

Dirty Air Filters
A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons that impede the cooling operation of your air conditioner. This issue strains your air-conditioning to blow warm air.

Check your air filter to ensure it is clean. If the existing air filter is dirty, replace it with a new one or clean it to see if the warm air issue resolves.

The outdoor unit has lost power.
Air conditioning systems have an indoor unit that handles air inside the home and the outdoor, a condensing unit. If the indoor unit is working fine, it will blow air into your home. But if the outdoor unit is not working properly, there will be no cooling.

The outdoor unit could lose its power due to tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. You will need to see and check the circuit breaker and the fuse panel. If you can’t figure it out, call your trusted hvac service provider.

The outdoor unit is not maintained
Walk outside to look at your outdoor unit. Does everything look fine? If you see any dirt and debris that have blocked the condenser coils air flow, just remove it. To clean dirt and soft debris, use the water hose spray. Do this at least once or twice a year, ideally once in the spring and once in the summer.

Refrigerant low or leak
Refrigerant is the main substance that flows through your air-conditioning system to make your home cool. If it’s low or leaking, your AC will struggle to cool your home. If there is a leak, you will have frozen evaporator coils. Get your professional help to figure it out and fix it.
