DEBUNKING SOME MORE HVAC MYTHS!

1. MYTH: The only function of air conditioners is to cool the air

As the name suggests, air conditioners condition the air. This means that they not only cool the air, but they also remove excess humidity from it simultaneously. Air conditioning is the process of cooling air and and controlling its temperature and humidity all at the same time. Modern air conditioners have various functions as well.

2. MYTH: Duct tape should be used for duct leaks

The name ‘duct tape’ is misleading, and this confuses a lot of people. It is a cloth-backed, rubber-adhesive tape. It is strong, but it is unable to withstand weather fluctuations, so it is basically useless when it comes to using it for actual ducts.

The reason we seal ductwork is to prevent air leaks, which lead to a lot of energy being wasted. If duct tape is used on ducts, it will only last for a short period of time. The tape will eventually fail and will not seal the ductwork leaks any longer, and you use heated or cooled air through these leaks.

Additionally, there is a chance that the duct tape will melt if it gets too hot, and it can potentially become a safety hazard too.

3. MYTH: It is easy to find air leaks around your home

You may think that finding air leaks around your home is an easy task, but unfortunately, that is not the case. In fact, even larger leaks can be difficult to find. Taking the help of an HVAC technician is the only reliable way of spotting such leaks. They are the ones who can find as well as seal these leaks properly. This is another reason why regular check – ups are a necessity – professionals will be able to seal leaks before they lead to bigger problems, and this way, they will help you save energy and money on your electricity bills. They will ensure that your HVAC system is running efficiently and adequately.

4. MYTH: HVAC equipment is less important than insulation

Both HVAC equipment and insulation matter if you want an efficient heating or cooling process. Negligence in one will affect the usefulness of the other two. The perfect equipment will ensure a smooth heating or cooling process and thermal insulation is one of the best ways of reducing energy consumption by preventing heat gain or loss in your home. Efficient HVAC equipment along with a ‘tight’ and properly insulated home is the best combination you can have.

5. MYTH: The denser the air filter, the better

This is not always true – it is one of those things people mistake to be beneficial. Besides the fact that a denser air filter might sometimes not benefit them at all, it might actually make things worse. Replacing your air filters with a denser one may seem smart, as it can collect more particles, but it also reduces air flow significantly. It will also clog up more and faster, and both of these issues can hurt your system in numerous ways. Unless a denser filter is truly needed and has been advised by a professional, a standard 1-inch filter is usually the best option
